HI Jen, there isn't an absolute prohibition on generators in the Murray River National Park (Katarapko is one section of the park), but the basic guideline is that they can't be disturbing other campers in any way. Therefore only very quiet generators are allowed, and not during the evening/night. I.e. It would be OK to have a quiet generator for cooking tea, but not running after that. Bear in mind that noise travels a long way on a still evening. As an example, I was once visiting people camped on Katarapko Creek and there was music coming from the direction of of the island. It wasn't real loud, but unnecessary background noise when you'd prefer to enjoy the sounds of nature in the evening, Was a bit confusing as there didn't seem to be anyone camped on the island so we took a look at the map. We realised that Katarapko Island was only 1km wide at that point and the music was from people camped on a river sandbar the other side of the island! The unwritten rule for all noise is consideration for others. Therefore park rangers could issue a fine for noisy generators or for having them going during the evening/night. Long explanation, but hope it helps.
