We drove up from Glasgow and stayed at the Hotel Melvich in Thurso (you can see my review on this). It was about 32 miles away and took 50 minutes. From Perth it is about 250 miles and will take a little under 5 hours to drive. The castle website has details on how to get there including, I think, public transport.
Hello - could you let me know whether dogs are allowed (on a lead) in the gardens? I am visiting Scotland in June, and it was my uncle's family (Imbert Terry) who I believe sold the property to the Queen Mother, so I would be very interested in coming.

The ticket office can also direct you to a shaded parking area in the wood if you want to leave your dogs in the car while you tour the castle.

The only steps are inside the Castle. Most steps are short, but I think there are about 3 levels to the Castle. I don't remember them being difficult. It is a short distance from the car park to the entrance to the Castle. If you have trouble with long walks, you might eliminate the walk to the animal farm. The gardens are close by, but unless you visit when everything is in bloom, you might consider skipping that as well. You might consider visiting the website and emailing them. The Castle is a very interesting look into the life of the Queen Mum. Hope you can visit.
