When we visited it was free. However they did state donations were accepted. There was a donation box at the beginning and end of the tour. There was no pressure to donate and I observe about 50% dropped something in the box.
I'm thinking of taking my 91-year-old mother to Galena for a few days. She is healthy and does get around okay, but I saw the photo with all of the stairs to the Grant home and I don't think she can do all of those stairs. Is there another entrance into the building that you saw?

There are a number of steps from the street below. There is a very small parking lot next to the building next door or you could go s drop off. The stairs inside the house to the second floor are narrow and slightly steep. There may be an elevator as I have a vague memory of the area in the main floor foyer. Worth seeing!
