A fireplace pilot light is no different ... that the thermocouple or gas valve are not working properly, turn off the gas to the fireplace until the problem can be fixed by a professional.

Look for a valve near the fireplace ... Check that the pilot control knob is set to “off.” If it’s on, turn it to off and allow five to 10 minutes for any residual gas to disperse.
