In Cairo’s Islamic quarter, the once bustling hubbub of tourists and Cairenes enjoying the area's treasure trove of mosques, mausoleums and madrasas has been replaced by the sound of progress.
This neighborhood in southern Cairo is the oldest part of the city, with twisting alleyways and ancient churches that are several centuries older than the ornate mosques of Islamic Cairo.
It is one of the oldest mosques in a traditional part of Cairo which has recently been restored. Visitors are allowed to the top of the minaret but you will have to climb the narrow steps.
You can reach Islamic Cairo by car, taxi or tour bus. Travelers can also take the metro to the Naguib stop, but the neighborhood's famous mosques are not situated within walking distance.
