A Practical Application for All Nine of the IEW Units
Unit 1 shows students how to create an outline from a single paragraph and Unit 2 shows them how to take that outline and re-create a paragraph. These units are there to get the kids started and are easy to learn thus helping even the most writing-phobic student to begin.

2024年8月6日 · In Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines, students learn to plan to write before they write. The plan is called a key word outline, or KWO. The KWO is the first step of the writing process, where a student organizes his or her thoughts.
To grade a student’s paper, parents would pick their preference- a simple sum of the Style and Structure scores, or an average of the two for a 50%-50% split. The points suggested are based on IEW’s different material*, and can be changed. Marking the Style Checklist: Parents know their students, and their capabilities for any given week.
In Units 1 and 2, Mr. Pudewa teaches the students to take key words from an outline and turn them back into a paragraph. This is the foundation for all other writing and is described in Teaching Writing: Structure and Style on disc one. Below are some commonly asked questions about this process.
