Point Delta was determined by the navigational position of USS SKYLARK which was in UQC communication with THRESHER at the time of the latter’s breakup. The search area was reduced to 1 mile by 1 mile near the end of the summer.

Thresher then imploded on crush depth and was later found in a very large debris field in 8,400 feet (2,560 metres) deep water, in thousands of pieces. The second USS THRESHER (SSN-593) was the lead ship of her class of nuclear-powered attack submarines in the United States Navy.
