Baroness Karen Christenze von Blixen-Finecke (born Dinesen; 17 April 1885 – 7 September 1962) was a Danish author who wrote in Danish and English. She is also known under her pen names Isak Dinesen, used in English-speaking countries; Tania Blixen, used in German-speaking countries; Osceola, and Pierre Andrézel.

Karen Blixen was born on April 17, 1885, to a wealthy mother, Ingeborg Westenholz, and a writer and army officer father, Wilhelm Dinesen, in the Rungstedlund manor, Denmark. She had two sisters and two brothers.

Her father, a colorful character himself, was a soldier-of-fortune and adventurer who lived and worked as a fur trapper among the Sokaogan Chippewa in North America. He returned to Denmark but not before fathering a child with a Native American woman among the Chippewa.
