I think that films that try to say "big and deep" things in a simplistic manner have just as much potential to be pretentious. Pretentious, as well as its definition, reside in the eye of the beholder.

Pretentious is a highly subjective word that gets thrown around a lot. Many times it is because someone observing a piece of art lacks the framework to understand how the art works or interpret the meaning it creates.

2016年2月1日 · Okay, I'll challenge your definition further bc it doesn't quite get to the actual meaning of the word. Appealing to critics for awards doesn't necessarily make something pretentious. Of course, the implication is that being award-driven makes the content flashy and ultimately superficial.
