Vervets live in social groups ranging from 10 to 70 individuals, with males moving to other groups at the time of sexual maturity. Studies done on vervet monkeys involve their communication and alarm calls, specifically in regard to kin and group recognition, and particular predator sightings.

Vervet monkeys are polygynous, with females typically having few mates during their lifetime, while some males will have numerous mates. From about five years old they are able to reproduce. The mating season is between April and June.

Size: Male vervets are 17-24 in (42-60 cm), and females 11.8-19.5 in (30-49.5 cm). Weight: Males weigh around 8.6-17.6 lbs (3.9-8 kg), while females weigh 7.5-11.7 lbs (3.4-5.3 kg).

Vervet monkeys are also easily recognized by their black faces, hands, and feet. They have blue skin on their abdomens, which is especially bright on the male monkeys. Talk about a life in color!

Male vervet monkeys have a bright blue scrotum which is used as a signal or dominance over the males in the group. An adult vervet monkey will measure between 35 and 66cm (14-27in) long with a weight of 2.5-9kg (5.5-20lbs). Males tend to be slightly smaller than females.

Endowed with a distinct physicality, the vervet monkey male boasts a robust physique, marked by well-defined muscles and, in some species, a striking splash of vibrant fur that advertises both virility and individual identity.

Males are more conspicuous. For most of the year they show off pale blue testicles. During mating season these testicles turn bright blue, a flamboyant show to suggest their suitability as a mate! Vervets can also be identified through their troop behaviour.

Males transfer troops at least once in their lifetime, beginning at puberty. This is a dangerous process, not only because of the predators they may encounter in transit but also because troops dislike immigrants.
