The Batalá bands principally play Samba Reggae, a world music that incorporates Brazilian Samba and Caribbean Reggae. We play the compositions and arrangements of Mestre Giba Gonçalves, founder of Batalá, and other mestres on metal drums with polymer skins.
Together the Surdo 1 & 2 create a “heartbeat.” Dobra The Third Surdo or Small Surdo plays the samba reggae “off beat” and other syncopated rhythms. It cuts in between the beats of the two big drums with more complex rhythms and leads the dancing movements in the band. Repique
Batala members play four different drums: Surdos 1 and 2, Surdo 3 (referred to as Dobra), Repinique, and Snare (referred to as Caixa). The biggest Surdo, called Primero or 1, plays on beats 1 & 3 and sets the tempo for the band.

The Repinique (also known as Repi) is a small, high-pitched drum played with flexible plastic sticks. The repinique is responsible for Batala’s fastest and most complex rhythms.
Batala Philly is an all-percussion, community band that plays Samba Reggae music from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. As part of the larger Batala Mundo global arts project, we also play with other Batala bands in the U.S. and around the world.
