DICOM ® — Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine — is the international standard for medical images and related information. It defines the formats for medical images that can be exchanged with the data and quality necessary for clinical use.

A DICOM data object consists of a number of attributes, including items such as name, ID, etc., and also one special attribute containing the image pixel data (i.e. logically, the main object has no "header" as such, being merely a list of attributes, including the pixel data).

What is DICOM used for? DICOM is used in virtually all hospitals worldwide. It ensures the interoperability of systems used to: Produce, Store, Display, Send, Query; Process, Retrieve, Print... medical images and derived structured documents, as well as to manage the related workflow. Who needs DICOM?
