After Jimmy is wrongfully ejected from the school band for tripping, his flute transforms into a magical talking golden flute named Freddy and they venture on a journey. Orchestrated by Witchiepoo, Jimmy takes an evil boat to Living Island, an island where everything is alive.

Jimmy (portrayed by Jack Wild) – A young English human who was lured to Living Island by an enchanted boat. Witchiepoo controlled the boat with the aim of stealing Jimmy's magic talking flute named Freddy.

H.R. Pufnstuf was a talking dragon, who takes it upon himself to protect his new friends Jimmy and Freddy from Witchiepoo, who will stop at nothing to steal Freddy, and is aided by her two bumbling flunkies Orson and Seymour (a talking vulture, and spider, respectively).
