Celloidin is used in solution, usually in a 1:1 mixture of ethanol-ether at concentrations of 2%, 4% and 8%. The equivalent concentrations for LVN are 5%, 10% and 20%. Celloidin may be purchased either as a solution or as a solid, damped with a liquid to reduce flammability.

Celloidin Embedding. Celloidin is dissolved in equal parts of absolute alcohol and ether. The tissue is dehydrated in alcohol in the same way as for paraffin except that it is transferred from absolute alcohol to a dilute solution of celloidin. As the alcohol and ether evaporate, they are replaced by more concentrated celloidin.

Strictly speaking, celloidinisation is not an adhesive technique but an entrapment. It is used when sections are lifting off the slide or when the staining procedure involves strongly alkaline solutions, ammoniacal silver for instance, which tend to soften protein adhesives, particularly egg albumen.
