The Fehmarn Belt fixed link (Danish: Femern Bælt-forbindelsen, German: Fehmarnbelt-Querung) or Fehmarn Belt tunnel is an under-construction immersed tunnel, which will connect the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn, crossing the 18-kilometre-wide (11 mi) Fehmarn Belt in the Baltic Sea.

Denmark’s largest infrastructure project and the world’s longest immersed tunnel. An immersed tunnel is a safe, tested and efficient way of building an underwater tunnel. The technology is Danish developed and builds on experiences from, among others, the Øresund Tunnel.

Construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel began in 2020 initially on the Danish side, and in 2021 on the German side. You can find the overall schedule for the project here.

At 18 km long the Fehmarnbelt tunnel will be the world’s longest immersed tunnel. This ambitious project will create a road and rail link between continental Europe and Scandinavia, cutting journey times and distance. Enabling traffic to use the shortest route will reduce CO2 emissions.

2024年8月12日 · The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link across the 20 km wide strait - from coast to coast - will consist of an electrified double-track railway line and a four-lane road link. It will connect Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn and Rødby on the Danish island of Lolland via an immersed tube tunnel.

The Fehmarnbelt project does not only consist of an immersed tunnel between Denmark and Germany. As a key element in the project, the railway from Ringsted to Rødby will be upgraded so that freight trains can run on the line and travel time to Hamburg will be shortened.
