The Historisches Grünes Gewölbe (Historic Green Vault) almost makes you dizzy. This was exactly the effect that August the Strong (1670-1733) intended when, between 1723 and 1730, he realised his vision of a baroque Gesamtkunstwerk as an expression of wealth and power.

In 2004, the Neues Grünes Gewölbe was reopened, followed in 2006 by the Historisches Grünes Gewölbe, both eliciting – to this day – an uninterrupted flood of visitors. Together, the two exhibition areas represent one of the oldest and best-preserved treasuries of Europe.

Entering the Historisches Grünes Gewölbe through the museum’s state-of-the-art airlock, which protects the 3000 free-standing objects and allows for consistent climate control, visitors embark on a visual journey to the Baroque period.

The largest green diamond ever found now shines again in the Neues Grünes Gewölbe (New Green Vault). The newly designed Watzdorf Cabinet in the Residenzschloss Dresden (Royal Palace) surprises with a fascinating face and multimedia background stories about the precious piece of the diamond set from the royal jewel treasure.

While in the Historisches Grünes Gewölbe Fascinating objects of gold, silver, enamel, precious stone, ivory, coconut shell and ostrich eggshell are shown in non-reflective glass cabinets, radiant thanks to state-of-the-art lighting – a presentation that sets a new benchmark internationally.
