Some people have pointed out that, in ancient japan, criminals were marked with tattoos for their crimes. Arm tattoos would mean the person was a thief, while being marked on the face meant they were murderers. We don't have a confirmation but it's a safe guess because sukuna is rather ancient himself and gege loves historical references.

2024年5月9日 · I was meaning the cursed appendages that are on half his face. They are completely different. The markings/tattoos have been virtually the same since the begin of the series. I was thinking that maybe it's an indication that they signify a change in something since they've had starkly different designs over the last couple dozen chapters.

2020年8月22日 · More than once, characters have questioned whether it was Sukuna or Yuji in control. But if they could see the black marks that appear on his body when Sukuna is in control, it would be pretty obvious.

2022年4月3日 · It was a really idiotic “theory” that someone made saying that the sukuna marks were like the demon slayer effects in that they weren’t real and it was just for the reader to tell who was who. They had exclusively very poor evidence, using a few panels where certain people had confusion over whether it was sukuna or yuuji that they saw.
