Completed in 1882 at a cost of $65,000, this monolithic, 60-foot high granite pyramid was built by the Union Pacific Railroad Company. It stands on the highest elevation (8,247 feet) of the original transcontinental railroad route.

The monument is a four-sided, random ashlar pyramid, 60 feet (18 m) square at the base and 60 feet (18 m) high, constructed of light-colored native granite. The pyramid features an interior passage, now sealed, alongside the perimeter of the structure's base.

The tracks have since been moved, but the monument is still easily visible and accessible from Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo.

Rough-hewn and rune-cryptic, accessible only by a dirt track, the pyramid stands alone on a treeless, windswept plateau of Wyoming sagebrush. It was built when the only roads out here were railroads, and 100-year-old postcards show it to be just as empty then as it is now.
