A dipper averages 4,200 feathers per bird compared to a robin's average 3,000 feathers. Dippers tend to be socially monogamous; polygamy is rare. Dippers have the unusual habit of removing the lining inside their round mossy nest after the chicks have fledged.

Hairy Woodpeckers are closer to 10 inches long, the size of a robin and more than twice the weight of the Downy. The other major difference is their bills; a Hairy Woodpecker’s bill is long - about as long as its head, while a Downy Woodpecker’s is distinctly shorter, less than half the width of its head.

From the ground, Red Knots are distinctive. They are about the size of a robin, they have a medium-length bill for a shorebird that ever so slightly droops downward, but really what’s so eye catching about this sandpiper is their breeding plumage.
