Her husband, actor Charles Kimbrough, told The Associated Press that Howland died Dec. 31 of lung cancer in Santa Monica, California.

Alice works alongside Mel Sharples (Vic Tayback), the grouchy, stingy owner and cook of the greasy spoon, and fellow waitresses and friends, sassy, man-hungry Florence Jean "Flo" Castleberry (Polly Holliday), and neurotic, scatterbrained Vera Louise Gorman (Beth Howland).

Like many of her Alice contemporaries, Beth Howland began her professional career in New York as a Broadway actress and performed in such musical hits as "Company" and "Bye Bye, Birdie." Her transition over to television came in 1970 when she was invited for an audition for an upcoming guest role on a "Mary Tyler Moore" episode.

Vera Louise Novak (nee Gorman) was a character in the 1974 movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and then on the long-running CBS-TV situation comedy series, Alice. In the film, the role was played by actress Valerie Curtin. On the TV series, she was played by actress Beth Howland.
