Art is a uniquely human activity associated fundamentally with symbolic and abstract cognition. Its practice in human societies throughout the world, coupled with seeming non-functionality, has led to three major brain theories of art. (1) The localized brain regions and pathways theory links art to multiple neural regions.

We applied activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta‐analysis to identify the brain activation of domain‐mechanisms by synthesizing functional neuroimaging studies across three forms of artistic creativity: music improvisation, drawing, and literary creativity.

The art produced by neurological patients reveals that when brain damage is localized or diffuse, or when neurodegenerative brain disease is present, or when there is savant autism, or Parkinson’s disease, artistic depictions of the imagination are still possible.
