Dame Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth (10 January 1903 – 20 May 1975) was an English artist and sculptor. Her work exemplifies Modernism and in particular modern sculpture. [ 1 ] Along with artists such as Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo , Hepworth was a leading figure in the colony of artists who resided in St Ives during the Second World War.

Her first major solo exhibition (Temple Newsam, Leeds 1943) was followed by a monograph by William Gibson (Barbara Hepworth: Sculptress, 1946). Nine major works, including two late multi-part group sculptures, Conversation with Magic Stones and three figures from The Family of Man , were exhibited in the gardens that surround the museum.
