This stage occurs during the fetal period from week 16 to 24.

This explains why the entire development extends from the embryonic period through the fetal period up to birth (and even afterwards). During intrauterine life, the lungs are nevertheless an important source of amniotic fluid .

The stage of lung development at term correlates with the physical activity of the newborn. The marsupial quokka wallaby (Setonix brachyurus) is born in the canalicular stage and may be the least physically mature mammal directly after birth (Makanya et al. 2001).
