Gnosticism is a term modern scholars have used to refer to any of various philosophical and ideological movements in the Greco-Roman world in the early Christian era, particularly in the 2nd century. The meaning of the term is, however, disputed, and there is little scholarly consensus on whether these movements are in fact related and, if so, how.

Some teachings identified with gnosticism may have emerged before Christianity did. Others may have developed apart from Christianity, in heterodox Jewish circles, and then been adapted by groups that considered themselves to be Christian.

Cerinthus (flourished c. ad 100) was a Christian heretic whose errors, according to the theologian Irenaeus, led the apostle John to write his New Testament Gospel.
