Personally, I think 5E deals with Counterspell pretty much like MTG. You just cast a "universal anti-magic spell" and it cancels the other spell even if you don't know which spell the other mage is casting (in MTG you always know the spell), which makes Counterspell easier to pull off successfully, and with basically no possible drawbacks.

If counterspell didn't exist I guarantee parties would be okay with buying scrolls of the Anchor spell to cast a reaction spell that can stop people from teleporting away. In fact buying scrolls of useful utility spells is a big thing in DND. I have my reasons for hating counterspell.
