Grounds - Helen Keller Birthplace
Located on a 640-acre tract in historic Tuscumbia, Ivy Green was built in 1820 by David and Mary Fairfax Moore Keller, grandparents of Helen Keller. The old “whistle path” carries the visitor to the outdoor kitchen from the main home.

Built in 1820 only one year after Alabama became the 22 nd State of the U.S., Ivy Green is a simple, white clapboard home design in typical Southern architecture. The main house is of Virginia cottage construction, with four large rooms on the first floor bisected by a wide hall.

Biography - Helen Keller Birthplace
After the visit Bell connected the Kellers to The Perkins Institute and by March 3, 1887 Anne Sullivan came to Ivy Green to be Helen’s teacher. The strong willed Sullivan, a recent graduate of the Perkins school, met her match in Helen.
