This is the story of Koko and her kitten, All Ball. It is a story in which a gorilla tells us about herself in a language that expresses love, anger, sorrow and joy—and in the process, inspires a new-found respect for all creatures.

Koko was later featured on the cover of National Geographic in 1985 with a picture of her and her kitten, All Ball. [17] In 1985, Scholastic Inc. published Koko's Kitten, a children's picture book based on the National Geographic story.

Koko seemed to enjoy conversations about her kitten. This dialogue took place between Koko and a research assistant named Janet. “I’ll give you some grapes if you tell me about Ball, the cat,” Janet said. “Soft,” Koko signed. “What kind of animal is he?” Janet asked. “Cat, cat, cat,” Koko answered. “Do you love Ball?”

Koko adopted a kitten called All Ball. When All Ball was hit by a car, Koko’s grief at the loss of her friend captured the imagination of the nation and prompted headlines around the whole world.
