There are 23 IITs in India offering various UG, PG, and PhD Engineering Courses in India. All the IITs in India are governed by The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, as per which they are declared the "Institutions of National Importance", by the Ministry of Education.

From 2008 to 2009, eight new IITs were set up in Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Indore, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Ropar, and Mandi. In 2015 to 2016, six new IITs in Tirupati, Palakkad, Dharwad, Bhilai, Goa, and Jammu, approved through a 2016 bill amendment, were founded, along with the conversion of Indian School of Mines Dhanbad into IIT, Dhanbad.
