The scabbard deserved plot resolution, but going back to the Straw Hats, you have a decent amount of character interaction and progression. Luffy grew in his fight against Kaido once he realized the stakes were higher than ever, becoming more determined throughout the arc, to liberate Wano not just for himself but for the people to be free too.

Robin's backstory is absolutely heartbreaking, the saddest of the entire crew so far and probably the saddest overall in the entire story so far as well, although Law's backstory is pretty good competition.

How is Luffy in Wano any different than Naruto in the War Arc?
Luffy can already make himself gigantic via Gear 3. If he wants to turn his surroundings into rubber, he can do it. That was already expected out of his awakening, because that is how all Paramecia awakenings worked. Even if the Gum-Gum Fruit was still "just" the Gum-Gum Fruit, and it awakened, everything Luffy is doing would still happen.

We get a lot of Zoro-sword business in the arc so it might also have been a way to ease people into the thought that Zoro's swords are important to Wano.
