Designed by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto during his time teaching at MIT, Baker House (Building W7) is emblematic of the institution’s postwar shift toward emphasizing the residential experience of undergraduate students.

Designed by Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen, Kresge is architecturally significant as a leading example of a minimalist thin-shell concrete structure. The building – located at the center of campus, facing the Chapel (also designed by Saarinen) – first opened its doors in 1955.

Building Dimensions: Steven Holl modeled the building after a sponge; He wanted it to feel porous throughout. One way he accomplished this was to create random shaped openings and atria throughout the building to simulate the lungs throughout. Atria, building cut throughs and terraces.
