Named by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, Mare Island soon became home to the first U.S. Naval shipyard on the West Coast. Today, a cadre of pioneering breweries, distilleries, wineries, artisans, and craftsmen are writing the next chapter.

For 142 glorious years, the waterfront of Mare Island shipyard could fabricate or fix, rig or retrofit, pretty much everything. Today a cadre of new artisans continue the legacy. A half-mile down the waterfront from us (one mile roundtrip), the Savage & Cooke distillery has set up shop.
First Street Taphouse - Mare Island Brewing Co.
The building that is now home to our First Street Taphouse has a long and storied history in downtown Benicia. Originally built in the 1890s, the building began as Elsie's Rooming House (presumably a reputable hotel), before later gaining notoriety as one of lower First Streets many former bordellos.
