Two-seater runabouts like this 1906 Ford Model N were favored by middle-class Americans who could afford one. They were fast and rugged. Most runabouts featured one- or two-cylinder engines and bicycle-style chain drives. But this Ford Model N offered four cylinders and a shaft drive, plus it cost less.

Approximately 20,000 Model N,R,S models were built from 1906 through 1908. They feature a 150 cubic-inch inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 15-18 horsepower. It uses a two-speed planetary transmission and a fully enclosed driveline. Being relatively light at about 850 pounds, they offer lively performance.

Purchased by the Merrick Auto Museum in 1998, this Model N Ford was previously in the Don Sherwood Collection. An excellent example of the “bee-tail” Ford, so named for the shape of its rear deck, the car presents very well in red with white accent striping, which contrasts nicely with the black fenders and black-buttoned leather seating.
