Neurocardiogenic syncope (also known as vasovagal syncope) is a benign condition characterised by a self limited episode of systemic hypotension. Stimulation of the cardiac C fibres results in vasodilation and increased vagal tone, with consequent reduction in cardiac filling and bradycardia, with ensuing syncope.

Neurally mediated syncope is a disorder of the autonomic regulation of postural tone, which results in hypotension, bradycardia, and loss of consciousness. A wide variety of stimuli can trigger this reflex, the most common stimulus being orthostatic stress.

Neurally mediated syncope (NMS) is one of the most frequent forms of syncope. It has also been known as vasovagal syncope, neurocardiogenic syncope, common or emotional fainting, or reflex syncope.
