Neutron scattering, the irregular dispersal of free neutrons by matter, can refer to either the naturally occurring physical process itself or to the man-made experimental techniques that use the natural process for investigating materials.
So what is neutron scattering? When a neutron strikes a material object and leaves in a new direction it is said to have been scattered. Its momentum is changed and it may or may not also change its kinetic energy. In a neutron scattering experiment a sample is placed in a beam and some of the scattered neutrons are counted.
