The Nikkei Matsuri Foundation is a registered nonprofit public benefit charity organized under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Founded in 1978, our mission is “To perpetuate the Japanese American experiences, cultural customs, and traditions.”

Nikkei Matsuri’s origin began with the City of San Jose’s 1977 Bicentennial Celebration, Issei Legacy, which was an event that coordinated over thirty Japanese American cultural groups and associations.

Nikkei Matsuri supports Japanese cultural arts through these programs: The Warren Hayashi Cultural Grant providing support to Japanese cultural schools; The Jimi Yamaichi Scholarship awards students who show significant involvement in Japantown or have been impacted by their study of a Japanese artform
