AN INTAGLIO OF JUNO WITH PEACOCKS, CIRCA 17TH CENTURY AD
A carnelian intaglio showing a reclining figure of Juno with two peacocks. Juno is shown crowned as the queen of the Gods and holding her scepter in her left hand. She is flanked by two peacocks and is lying on a bank of clouds. The pose of the goddess suggests a strong manneristic influence of Italian art of the late 16th to early 17th century.

Requena (2005-6) has identified the work with a painting cited in August 1657 as ‘Pallas’ in the inventory of the assets of Margarita Cajés, daughter of the painter Eugenio. There it is attributed to Cano and its measurements are said to be half a vara wide and a vara and a sesma high, which coincides with those of this canvas.

This painting is a sketch (!) for the ceiling of the Heaven Room at Burghley House near Stamford. The painting differs from the finished work in that the figures are more densely packed.
