Pathology is undeniably different than most other medical fields. But now that you know more about what a pathologist does, you may be starting to envision yourself thriving in this complex role. Before you can think about becoming a pathology doctor, however, you’ll need to gain acceptance to medical school.

Pathology has always been viewed as extremely inexpensive – the tests have had excellent value for money, especially when compared with things like complex imaging techniques. But now that labs have begun to move more heavily into molecular testing, doctors and patients are starting to notice that the tests cost more than they used to.

There is little uniformity among medical facilities with regard to the number of cores removed during a biopsy and how they are labeled. Sometimes the cores are submitted to the pathology lab in two containers labeled simply “right” and “left,” referring to the side of the prostate they were taken from.

The primary benefit of digital pathology—enabling remote reporting across different hospital sites, nationally, and even internationally—is hindered by the NHS’s institutional infrastructure. Although the NHS is perceived as a single organization, even neighboring hospitals can have different cybersecurity rules.

The molecular age histopathologist of today is practicing pathology in a totally different scenario than the preceding generations did. Histopathologists stand, as of now, on the cross roads of a traditional 'visible' morphological science and an 'invisible' molecular science.
