Chief Pocatello (known in the Shoshoni language as Tondzaosha (Buffalo Robe); 1815 – October 1884) was a leader of the Northern Shoshone, a Native American people of the Great Basin in western North America. He led attacks against early settlers during a time of increasing strife between settlers and Native Americans.

Born around 1815 in the Grouse Creek region of present northwestern Utah, Pocatello was headman of his band of Shoshones by the time the Mormons arrived. As settlers began converting Indian ancestral lands into farms and the California gold rush led to increased traffic westward, Indians increasingly responded with raiding attacks.

On January 29, 1863, a frigidly cold day, Connor and the troops under his command attacked a peaceful Shoshone winter camp on the Bear River, northwest of present-day Preston, Utah. The result was the death of approximately 400 Shoshone men, women and children, the largest documented Indian massacre in the history of the the United States.

Chief Pocatello was born about 1815 in the Grouse Creek Valley of western Utah. He was part of the Northwestern Shoshones, who ranged from the Nevada/Utah border east to the Bear Lake Valley and north to the Snake River. His given name was Tonaioza, which meant Buffalo Robe.

In the early to mid 1800’s, the Northwestern Shoshone had adopted most of the Plains Culture, using the horse for mobility and the hunting of game. Chief Pocatello especially led his band on numerous hunts for buffalo in the Wyoming area. Pocatello also gained notoriety as a reckless and fearless marauder along the Oregon and California trails.

Chief Pocatello was leader of the Lemhi Shoshone Indians that roamed Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains and surrounding areas. They were part of a larger Shoshone Nation which some called “fierce and bloodthirsty.”
