I found that using a room and putting the object with a mental image of it really help. Especially for the corner since you have to remember them for a longer time.

Took me about a day to solve it for the first time using the instructions that come with the Rubik's brand cube. Here is the PDF guide. As far as brands go, really any cheap speed cube off Amazon will do. Avoid the Rubik's brand cubes, they just don't turn very well.
