The Spanish campaign against the Aztec Empire had its final victory on 13 August 1521, when a coalition army of Spanish forces and native Tlaxcalan warriors led by Cortés and Xicotencatl the Younger captured the emperor Cuauhtémoc and Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire.

Cortez is driven from the city, but Montezuma II is killed. 1520 - Cuauhtémoc becomes the tenth emperor of the Aztecs. 1520 - Cortes forms an alliance with the Tlaxcala and begins to attack the Aztecs.

Cuauhtémoc was captured on August 13, 1521, which meant that Tenochtitlán finally fell into Spanish hands. From this date, the Mexican historical period called the colony began and lasted three centuries from 1521 to 1821.
