Suds is the first episode without Squidward appearing in Krusty Krab. Hans , the realistic hand, debuts in Suds as he appears outside the famous SpongeBob SquarePants theme song. It’s also the first time Gary is seen inside SpongeBob’s workplace.

The suds are a disease that can be contracted by sponges. In the episode of the same name and in the book SpongeBob Goes to the Doctor, SpongeBob catches this disease. In the episode "Whelk Attack," SpongeBob recalls his experience with it.

In the episode, SpongeBob got the suds due to him leaving the fridge open. The book omits that part out and simply states that SpongeBob just got them. Patrick scares SpongeBob about waiting at the doctor's office with old magazines and the stethoscope.

SpongeBob awakens hungry in the night. While preparing a midnight snack, he leaves the refrigerator open, causing his home to freeze. By morning he has developed the "suds", a sponge sickness similer to a cold or influenza. It is unknown if fish can get this sickness.
