TRSV spreads naturally mainly through the movement of viruliferous nematodes and infected seeds and pollen. The virus can also spread via imports and trade of infected host plants for planting, seeds, pollen and agricultural commodities associated with soil that might contain viruliferous vectors.

Later, the virus was identified in India as a pathogen to eggplants (Sastry and Nayudu, 1976). Among the other tobacco-infecting viruses are the potyviruses, tobacco etch virus, and tobacco vein mottle virus.
