Branch wasn't originally a character of the Trolls movie, but was added after it was re-conceptualized as a musical. He replaced the character "Masklin". Branch was designed after Poppy, who was the first character designed for the new musical. Whereas Poppy was conceptualized to be bright and cheerful, Branch was a contrasting grey color.
