The eight-member schools are Adamson University (AdU), Ateneo de Manila University, [a] De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (NU), University of the East (UE), University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

The UAAP basketball championships are basketball tournaments held from September to December by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, and the men's tournament is the flagship tournament of the UAAP. Basketball is a mandatory sport for all schools.

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), established in 1938, is an athletic association of eight Metro Manila universities in the Philippines.

The UAAP was founded by four universities: Far Eastern University, National University, the University of the Philippines, and the University of Santo Tomas. At present, the UAAP has eight member universities, all located in Metro Manila.

Established in 1938, the UAAP started with only four schools, namely UP, UST, NU, and FEU. Since then, it has dynamically expanded to become a full-pledging varsity league with the inclusion of UE and Adamson (1952), Ateneo (1978), and La Salle (1986) as members, competing in 14 disciplines.

UAAP is an organization with a board of respected industry practitioners that oversees the Men's Basketball Tournament.

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines was formalized on September 27,1938 with the Far Eastern University, the National University, the University of Santo Tomas, and the University of the Philippines as its founding members. At its core are the principles of camaraderie, sportsmanship and amateurism.
