Built by Vickers-Armstrongs at Weybridge, the Vickers Valiant was a four-jet, high-altitude, strategic bomber and was the first, and the most conservative in design, of the V-Bombers (the others being the Handley Page Victor and the Avro Vulcan).

Designed in response to the same specification that also eventually produced the Avro Vulcan and Handley Page Victor, the Valiant had an uncertain start to life. Vickers had been working on jet bomber designs since 1944 but with little interest from the government.

The Vickers Valiant is a high-altitude strategic bomber aircraft designed by Sir George Edwards and manufactured by Vickers-Armstrong. It was one of the V bomber aircraft of the Royal Air Force during the 1950s and 1960s.

The Valiant was the first of Bomber Command’s V class aircraft and established Britain’s air-borne nuclear deterrent force before pioneering operational in-flight refuelling in the Royal Air Force.

The Vickers 131 Valiant was a single-bay biplane of all-metal construction, powered by a 492 hp Bristol Jupiter VI engine. Its armament comprised a fixed forward-firing Vickers machine gun and a defensive Lewis gun ,mounted on a Scarff ring in the rear cockpit.
