If you have gears with a diametral pitch of 12, a 12-tooth gear will have a pitch diameter of 1", while a 24-tooth gear will have a p.d. of 2".

Just the reverse of finding the diameter of a gear blank where you take the number of gear teeth needed add 2 and divide by the D.P. of the gear you are wanting to cut. Kent

Since a circle of one inch diameter has a circumference of 3.1416" (Pi inches) then 3.1416 divided by the Circular pitch equals the Diametral Pitch (DP). Measure the CP as above and do the math. DP = 3.1416 / CP

Feb 14, 2018 · Another option is to get a gear pitch gage, I picked up a Fowler gage from McMaster-Carr a few weeks back and it has helped me save time in figuring it all out, I'm rebuilding a 1941 heavy 10 and have a fair amount of gears I need to remake for it, so getting a gage seemed like a no brainer.

Mar 6, 2017 · AFAIK, the helix angles of the rack and gear are the same. The rack is pretty easy to ESTIMATE accurately with a protractor, but the gear is not. Actually, a helical gear tooth has a range of helix angles, the theoretical helix angle is at the pitch diameter (about half way down the tooth) so it is difficult to directly measure it.
