Aesop (/ ˈiːsɒp / EE-sop or / ˈeɪsɒp / AY-sop; Ancient Greek: Αἴσωπος, Aísōpos; c. 620–564 BCE; formerly rendered as Æsop) was a Greek fabulist and storyteller credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables.

One of the earliest was by Lorenzo Bevilaqua, also known as Laurentius Abstemius, who wrote 197 fables, [16] the first hundred of which were published as Hecatomythium in 1495. Little by Aesop was included.

In the King James Version of the New Testament, " μῦθος " ("mythos") was rendered by the translators as "fable" [1] in the First Epistle to Timothy, the Second Epistle to Timothy, the Epistle to Titus and the First Epistle of Peter. [2] A person who writes fables is referred to as a fabulist.

The fables, numbering 725, were originally told from person-to-person as much for entertainment purposes but largely as a means for relaying or teaching a moral or lesson.
