Clearstream was founded as "Cedel" (Centrale de Livraison de Valeurs Mobilières) in September 1970 by 66 of the world's major financial institutions as a clearing organisation whose objective was to minimise risk in the settlement of cross-border securities trading, particularly in the growing Eurobond market.

Clearstream is an international securities custodian and settlement system. It is incorporated through the merger of Deutsche Borse Clearing and Cedel International. Crest is a UK-based securities settlement system that serves the London Stock Exchange. The Euroclear group acquired it in 2002. Origin: Europe and headquartered in Brussels, Belgium

2010年9月29日 · The international central securities depository (ICSD) Clearstream (previously Cedel) was founded on 28 September 1970 by 66 financial institutions from 11 countries to reduce the costs and risks of settling securities in the Eurobond market.

But Cedel is not celebrating. It is deeply worried about the competition it is facing from arch-rival Euroclear, which has a 66% market share. Cedel is particularly concerned about Euroclear's reluctance to improve the electronic bridge that allows the two houses to clear trades between each other. The bridge has become outdated.
