I think they have a certain image of the German language and particularly of the German culture in their head, so they probably do this because they don't know better. What I mean by that is they're probably used to weird stereotypes, like strictness etc., as you've mentioned some people still think German is a harsh language.

It's not pronounced like in English tho, the R sounds a lot more German. It's like SoRRy. Happened with many other words too like "okay", "cool" or "fuck", all extremely common words in German. The German variants for apology just seem overly formal to most younger people.
