Six sigma is by no means new. Motorola are widely acknowledged as the pioneers of the methodology and they introduced it over twenty years ago. The tools and philosophies behind it date back even further than that, some being more than fifty years old.

Six Sigma (6σ) is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. It was introduced by American engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986. [1][2] Six Sigma strategies seek to improve manufacturing quality by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes.

Six Sigma was created by Bill Smith in the 1980s, as the 80s were ending. He was working at Motorola at the time and needed a quality management tool to increase business performance. He set about developing the method and spent all of his energy on what would be the future of quality management.
